Discover nature, make new friends, and have fun!
On these exploratory hikes, we will be looking at various forms of life in the forest, from plants and trees to birds and bugs. We will learn about the delicate ecosystem in which the forest exists and how various life forms interact and depend on each other for their survival.
Harriman State Park
Youth ages 8-13.
Parents/Guardians are invited to join a separate guided hike, led by a Dominican College Professor, while the youth are involved in the program.
To protect participants, we will be following all statewide guidelines identified by NY Forward. A full list of guidelines will be provided to all participants prior to the hike.
Jeff Solomon is an avid nature lover and hiker who has hiked extensively in Harriman State Park. As a former middle school teacher and director of nature and pioneering programs at various summer camps, Jeff has a great deal of experience working in an educational and recreational capacity with youth and has led countless nature hikes. Jeff is also the founder of the National Camp Association, which is a children's summer camp organization.
Dr. Alvarez is a professor at Dominican College who teaches General Biology, Ecology and Botany, and other courses. Prior to teaching at Dominican, she taught for the City University of New York. Before joining academia, she worked for 19 years for the Central Park Conservancy, the managers of Central Park in New York City. She started as a gardener and worked her way up to Director of Horticulture and Woodland Management. Her focus was on native plants and ecological restoration. Her research focuses on the flora and ecology of urban environments. Dr. Alvarez is also an instructor of botany at the New York Botanical Garden, where she teaches Plant Physiology, Plant Morphology and Introduction to Plant Science.
